Mohit Karkhanis
Mohit Uday Karkhanis was born in Mumbai, India, in 1992. He received his Bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Pune, India, in 2014. His undergraduate thesis was centered on efficiently splitting mixed audio signals into their basic components using Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients. He joined the University of Utah, USA, as a PhD student in 2015 and has been working as a graduate research assistant to Dr. Carlos H. Mastrangelo in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. His research activities primarily deal with design, development, and integration of electronic systems, including the design and development of the world’s first “autofocusing, smart eyeglasses” which were featured in multiple press articles, low power oculometers, stroboscopic systems for MEMS imaging, embedded systems for MEMS devices, and systems featuring adaptive optical elements. His doctoral thesis is focused on understanding and correcting presbyopia using innovative accommodation response models of the human ocular system and adaptive optics technologies. He is also part of the research group which is building the world’s first smart contact lens system. In addition, Mohit is an avid enthusiast of Indian classical music and has been playing the Tabla, an ancient Indian percussion instrument for the last 22 years.
